The Atlantic’s editor, Jeffrey Goldberg, is one of the most distinguished writers in the United States, and his weekly column reflects that.
Goldberg writes that, based on interviews with people in Washington, “the best source of information about American life is an ordinary working American”. He is typically more scrupulous than most writers who have tried to write about American life, because he has a background in the foreign press and as a correspondent.
Goldberg has a lament for the foreign-based websites of the professional set: “Is there no going back to the way it was before the Internet? When an American journalist would carry a copy of the New York Times into a hotel lobby? Or write up a story for a fellow journalist, a mother, a kid, an uncle, a bus driver?”
But, in the course of his inquiries, Goldberg has discovered something else. The best source of information about American life is the television network of a former vice-president of the United States.
So I read what Goldberg says about Mitt Romney, and I found a lot of what he says to be true. But if I’d gone to the trouble of trying to quote this in the Atlantic, the editors of that magazine might have been surprised.

Of course, Emmer is a Republican. He hasn’t come out for Barack Obama, as he’s done on other issues (e.g. abortion, as in a recent post on Facebook), but he doesn’t think the president has delivered on his promises.
